Serious photographers rely on carefully calculated depth of field (DOF or Depth of Focus) to help draw attention to their subject or to bring an entire scene into sharp relief. Most shooters, though, would be delighted to simply have all of every image in focus. More importantly, with cameraphones focus is slow, ruining the moment in many cases. Fortunately, some nifty computational imaging hardware and software from Pelican Imaging will be changing all that for smartphone users fortunate enough to get one with their technology built-in. I had a great visit with the company and wrote up their novel approach to creating a camera module for ExtremeTech.
